January 2008 Dear VSA, We are writing to you on behalf of a group of Vietnamese Students and Alumni regarding China intensifying its illegal acts of aggression and invasion of Vietnam's Paracel and Spratly islands, also known as Hoang Sa and Truong Sa. This is a pivotal time in the history of Vietnamese people and despite being overseas, we can play a key role defending Vietnam's sovereignty over these archipelagos as well as defending Vietnam's rights in the Eastern Sea (South China Sea). This is far from the first time China has wrongly invaded and attacked Vietnam. For over a millennium in Vietnam's history, China wrongfully imposed upon Vietnam's sovereignty, taking advantage of our land and people to serve Chinese ambitions. But time and time again, Vietnamese heroes—The Trung Sisters, Lady Trieu Au, and Le Loi to name a few – fought back and at times, even sacrificed their lives so Vietnamese people could live free of Chinese control. Our ancestors feared not their own mortal deaths but the death of their dream: an independent Vietnam free of Chinese abuse. And, in giving the ultimate sacrifice to the country they loved, this dream lives on for generations of Vietnamese to honor.
