News from Washington reports that an oil exploration ship from China is carrying out activities on the sea close to Danang.

Trustworthy sources inform the RFA Vietnamese that a Chinese oil exploration ship is carrying out activities in the vicinity of the Paracel Islands, beyond the Son Tra peninsula of Danang.

These officials also inform that this is not the first time a Chinese ship explores for oil in the Paracels. However, it is the first time that it approaches so close to the Vietnamese shore.

A diplomat working in Southeast Asia said that he had heard of this news at least two weeks ago.

At the same time, a source from inside Vietnam says that the oil exploration ship is also accompanied by Chinese navy ship.

The Vietnamese government has not said anything about this matter.

If this is true, it just pisses me off. We know that China makes incursions into Vietnam's shores all the time. Taiwan also voices the same problem. China is not even waiting until the Olympics is over before it takes these actions. The news from before was that this year, the Spratlys will be quiet in term of the oil exploration activities from China because it doesn't want to risk affecting the Olympics. But I suppose the Paracels only involve Vietnam, so it's not such a big risk.
