China makes Vietnamese fishermen hold explosives to falsely accuse them

On the 7 and 8 of December 2009, three fishing
boats along with 43 fishermen from Ly
Son island, Quang Ngai province were seized while fishing on the sea
surrounding the Paracel Islands that China seized from Vietnam in 1974.
On 11 December
2009, all the fishermen were released and arrived back on Ly Son Island.
However, two of the boats along with all their instruments and other properties
worth 2 billion dong are still kept by the Chinese on Woody Island.
Although the
fishermen have returned to their families, they are still extremely
traumatized by what happened to them.
Duong Lua, the
owner of one of the boats still in the hands of the Chinese says:
The body has
returned safely, but all the properties that we have spent a lifetime trying to
save up have been completely lost. What can I do to take care of my family in
the time to come?
On the morning
of 7 December, when our boat was anchored on the sea near Paracel Islands,
suddenly a white steel boat belong to China appeared and tried to seize us. We
accelerated at the maximum speed but we could only go for about 11 nautical
miles before being caught up.
Le Van Loc,
also an owner of one of the boats relates:
On 8 December,
around mid day, we had just cast his news after three days anchored to escape
heavy winds, suddenly we saw Chinese boats surrounding the boat of Le Tan who
was fishing about 10 nautical miles from us. Terrified, we tried to escape, but
we could only go for about half an hour before the Chinese boats closed in and
seized our boat. Afterward, they took us to Woody Island at about 6:30 p.m.
When we were
seized, they took black cloths to cover our head. We were hungry and tired, so
we became even more terrified. At that time, we were all afraid that we would
never see our families again. After that, the Chinese locked all of us in their
storage room.
Duong Lua:
During the time
that we were locked up, the owner of the boats were continually forced by the
Chinese to sign various forms. Afterward, through a translator, each of us had
to sign a promise in Vietnamese. In our situation, we had no other way but sign
it.
Le Van Loc:
Before putting us on Mr. Tan’s boat to take us back to Ly
Son, the Chinese took bags of explosives from their own storage room and placed
them into the three boats that belonged to us. After that, each of our
fishermen had to hold a bag in their hands so that the Chinese can take videos
and pictures in order to accuse us of illegally using explosives.
Duong Lua:
I was relieved
when I got home after the days of being locked up. However, when I think about
tomorrow, I don’t know what my family will do since we don’t have a dime of
savings left.
Le Van Loc:
Now the only
thing I can do is stay at home and wait for the government to intervene with
China as soon as possible so I can find a way to feed my family.
