Be clear when you write. Don't make overarching statements. Malaysia is laying claims over certain islands in the Spratly archipelago, not the entire "Spratly Islands" as your statement may be interpreted. Malaysia's claims are based on the continental shelf principle. If this is the case, the disputes are based on the UN Law of the Sea, and the case can certainly be settled in ICJ i f necessary.

The main problem for Malaysia is not Vietnam, but China which claims waters that fall directly under Malaysia's Exclusive Economic Zone, as stipulated by the UNCLOS. By claiming over 3/4 of the South China Sea, China leaves about 5% of the sea left for each of the other countries bordering the SCS. This totally ignores the law regarding EEZs of countries along the sea.

We all know that the real dispute is not over the pieces of rocks, but over the water that is around them and what is potentially beneath those waters. And it is China's atrocious claims that ...
